Cunning Resolve

Cunning Resolve

Marvel’s promise to “keep taking risks” creatively into it’s Phase Two is already paying off, as relatively untested director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 crushed it at the box-office AND with critics.  Clinching the second highest domestic opening ever, and pulling in a gross $1,010,304,000 and rocking a 9/10 on IGN, Iron Man 3 is only Black’s second film as a director.  Marvel Studios seems to have a knack for boldly pulling creative gem’s out of nowhere, like they did with Joss Whedon.

NOW IM NOT A MATHEMATICIAN OR ANYTHING: but Shane Black’s average rottentomatoes score as a director with only two films turned out to be 80.5%.  Meaning that if making movies were like high-school, Black got a B.  Pretty impressive.  Equally not impressive: one could argue, is Zack Snyder’s average rottentomatoes score as a director with 5 films at 54.4%.  Meaning that if making movies were like high-school, Snyder failed.  LOLUMADBRO?!?

Queen of People’s Hearts

I do things differently, because I don’t go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart, not the head, and albeit that’s got me into trouble in my work, I understand that.  But someone’s got to go out there, love people and show it.

I am a free spirit – unfortunately for some.”

With Thought thru New Regions

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” spoken by Atticus Finch, in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.

Reverence for Life

How do you “truly” climb into another’s skin and walk around?  It is a hard thing to do, well.  For that person may be a different kind of person from you, from a different time, and from a different place.

My avocation since I was a child was as a Viking bystander.  My vocation lately has been as a Viking reader of books and people.

schweitzer_river

One can try to “climb into another’s skin” through watching a movie or play, or reading a book.  This is something we can do as humans.   We can visit different lands and different tribes – the modern words for “lands” and “tribes” is countries and cultures.  We can also visit some different “ages” – through movies and living in cultures that are different than your “culture” – although there are limitations and there is a possibility to not really get the “gestalt” of that age and place.  Are you just a tourist or just an anthropologist?

Please Understand Me.  Mostly, we don’t understand “truly” – the Temperament, the Tribe, the Age that is not like us.

But we can try.

Here are some autobiographies of the various Temperaments, many from a different time and different place.  Climb into the person’s skin, and walk around in it – at least for awhile.

Symbiotic Justice

Warner Bros. is ramping up their JLA efforts after Ben Affleck recently shot down reports that he might direct the film.  The studio has reportedly reached out to The Matrix Trilogy writers’ and directors’ Andy and Lana Wachowski to take the reigns of a Justice League of America film;

“According to Moviehole, the sibling directors behind the Matrix trilogy, Speed Racer and the upcoming sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas are on the studio’s list of possible contenders to helm JLA, which was scripted by Gangster Squad’s Will Beall. The site claims the studio is “apparently jazzed with Cloud Atlas, and love that it’s as much a spectacle as it is a showcase for the immense ensemble involved, so it makes sense the W’s are under consideration. Justice League needs to be as big on character, as it does bells & whistles, and the Wachowski’s could probably offer that.”

It’s no secret that Joss Whedon put a large emphasis on “character” in The Avengers, and given the films success, it seems WB will be attempting to follow suit.  Given DC’s roster, it seems like they’ll have a good shot at giving Marvel a run for it’s money.  What roster?  You ask?  Let’s take a look.

Madness, then, has a job to do, that is, to conceal our dark secret, so that we have an excuse for failing to live up to our expectations and for setting aside one or more of the tasks of life—working, communing, mating. The function of absurd rituals—madness—is thus concealment.                                         D. W. Keirsey

Dilpomat’s Affliction

WOWWWWW.  Do i want to see The Dark Knight Rises.  Like seriously.  FFS.  As the summer of the movie nerd approaches its mid-life crisis Christopher Nolan will be ramping up his viral marketing campaign.  And he certainly has as evidenced by this content right here.  The true question on everyone’s mind however is:  Can Tom Hardy’s Bane even get close to stacking up with Heath Ledger’s epic and dark portrayal of Gotham’s Clown Prince of CrimeThe God’s alone know my dear friends, but the film should be decent either way as: Anne Hathaway will be portraying villain/heroine/femme fatal Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman, while Marion Catillard is playing Liam Neeson’s daughter a.k.a villain/Batman love interest Miranda Tate or a potential Talia al Ghul.  And the young and talented Joseph Gordon Levitt will play a young Dark Knight replacement John Blake a.k.a a possible Robin.  What epic tactician’s cataclysm has Jonathan Nolan and his brother been able to concoct?  We will soon find out as The Dark Knight Rises can be seen in IMAX and 3d in less than a month on July 20th

Breaking news (via viral marketing) tells us that Gotham City is currently experiencing a slew of cat-related burglaries:

“All the victims were wealthy folks, who lost jewelry, family heirlooms and other precious valuables. The suspect is said to be dressed all in black, and is capable of a quick getaway.  Some of the victims were at a Wayne Enterprises event when their homes were burglarized.  The Observer adds that Deputy Police Commissioner Peter Foley (played by Matthew Modine) is heading up a task force composed of the GCPD’s brightest young recruits to catch the thief.”

WHO is Gotham’s Female Robin Hood?  A femme-fatal who refuses to kill, drowned in dichotomies and characterized by her allegiance ambiguity?  Let’s take a look.

Quote1.pngIdealist self-esteem is greatest when they see themselves or are seen by others as empathetic in bonding with people in their circle.  Idealist’s feel a kind of natural sympathy for man-kind, but they base their self-esteem on the empathy they feel with those people closest to them.  To the NFs, even introverted NFs, life is nothing without sensitive personal ties, without shared experiences and intimate attachments.  Without rapport so close that consciousness itself seems to be sharedNFs, after all, cannot not be personal, and the health of their relationships is beyond everything else the measure of their self-worth–enhanced when their relationships are deeply connected and vital, and diminished when they are distanced or troubled.Quote2.png  – Please Understand Me II p. 137

Tactician’s Cataclysm

The final trailer has dropped for The Dark Knight Rises and I literally just got goosebumps.  Ya.  I’m a nerd.  Christian Bale will be reprising his role as the caped crusader while bloody brit actor Tom Hardy will be playing primary villain Bane.  Other newcomers include: Anne Hathaway as a mysterious Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman, while Joseph Gordon Levitt plays John Blake or a possible Robin, and finally the beautiful Marion Cotillard plays Miranda Tate or a potential Talia Al Ghul.  Big Boss Man Christopher Nolan has indeed done a good job keeping most of this stuff underwraps, as the film is his swan song to the Batman franchise.  The film’s reportedly epic ending is on the utmost of DL, to the point that only Nolan and four other people know what it is.  Why does this movie look so frikkin cool you ask?  Because it’s about a good ol’ fashioned Artisan dogfight.

Abstract Conflict

I know.  The Avengers.  And the Four Basic Personality types.  We get it guys.  Well you see the funny thing about these four basic personality types is that they interact with one another in a complex fashion.  One of such a rivalry of course is that between Asgardian Princes Thor Odinson and Loki Laufeyson.  This bitter and delightful conflict between brothers may indeed be fictional, but serves however to highlight the important characteristics of the age-old conflict between Rational and Idealist.  Let’s go right on ahead then and take a look at this epic clash of abstract minds.

Romantic Diplomacy

The nominees for the 54th annual Grammy awards were announced Wednesday night and Kanye West (middle) leads the pack with 7 nods.  Adele (left), the Foo Fighters, and Bruno Mars followed close behind with 6 nominations each, while Lil’ Wayne and Skrillex both earned 5.  Full list of nominations here.  Squaring off for the award shows top honor of album of the year will be Adele (21), Foo Fighters (Wasting Light)Lady Gaga (Born This Way), Bruno Mars (Doo-Wops & Hooligans) and Rihanna (Loud).  Notable snubs include Taylor Swift‘s Speak Now for Album of the Year, Beyonce in general, and Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way for Song of the Year.  Looking on the bright side however for the Album of the Year award we will definitely be spared one of Taylor Swift‘s infamous over-the-top “oh my god I can’t believe it” speeches that she keeps pulling out of her ass.  Idiocy aside let’s take a look at rising star and hopeless romantic Bruno Mars.

Peter Gene Hernandez a.k.a Bruno Mars is a Filipino-American singer and songwriter who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii into a family of musicians.  Mars began making music at a young age, and after graduating high-school moved to LA to pursue a career in music.  A talented producer with a great voice and a charming smile, Mars drew from a wide variety of styles and influences, and quickly found his place in the music industry.  Using his childhood nickname Bruno, Hernandez added Mars because “a lot of girls say that I’m out of this world, so I was like I guess I’m from Mars.”  Mars’ debut album Doo Wops and Hooligans was released this October and gave him 6 grammy nominations.  The album is riddled with altruism, romance, and intense emotional experiences.   A hopeless romantic, highly in-touch with his feelings, extremely expressive, and fiercely independent Bruno Mars is undoubtedly a Champion Idealist.  Indeed Bruno exudes a kind of “spontaneous personal authenticity”, and communicates such through his unique musical style.  Bruno is characteristically positive in his outlook, and is surprised when people or events do not turn out as anticipated, as evidenced by his somewhat somber ‘trophy song’ Grenade.  Despite seemingly having his heart broken something tells me Bruno is gonna be ok:

Often their [Champions'] confidence in the innate goodness of life and human nature is a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Please Understand Me II, p. 156

The 54th annual Grammy awards airs February 12th on CBS.

Tactical Humility

Taylor Swift took home three trophies at the 39th Annual American Music Awards including the top honor Artist of the Year.  I know, right?  What a bunch of idiots.  It was the second time in three years she had been given the AMA’s top honor, and the fourth year in a row she’s won Favorite Country Album.  Taylor emphasized the fact that she did not expect to win the Artist of the Year Award and I think it’s safe to say that nobody did.  There was obviously some sort of huge mix-up and they just rolled with it.  Nicki Minaj was also a big winner, while Katy Perry was honored with a special award for being the first woman in history to have five #1 singles from the same album (Teenage Dream).  David Hasselhoff brang his idiocy to the table with an appearance in the finale performance by LMFAO.  On winning Taylor commented “this is just crazy” and “I really can’t believe that it happened”.  Neither can we Taylor.  Neither can we.  The “award darling” went three for three at the AMA’s and is starting to be the target of criticism for continually acting overwhelmingly surprised during her acceptance speeches.  We get it Taylor.  You’re a good songwriter.  Get over it.  Joking aside Taylor Swift is a very talented and humble artist so let’s go ahead and take a look at T Swizzle a.k.a. Tay Tay fo Shay Shay.

Taylor Alison Swift was born on a christmas-tree farm in an obscure town in Pennsylvania, and since early childhood has showed an exceptional talent for poetry, music, and writing.  Her artistic talents blossomed quite early, as she won a national poetry contest in the fourth grade, and wrote a 350-page novel at the age of 12.  After learning to play the guitar, Taylor had found her passion and started devoting most of her time to singing and songwriting.  Taylor admittedly got picked on in school, and used songwriting to express her emotions as an outlet for the pain of not fitting in.  After her family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, Taylor was able to display her talents and quickly became recognized.  Her breakout single “Tim Mcgraw” was the first of many hits, while “Love Story” subsequently shoved her into the national spotlight.  Highly emotional, musically harmonic, adorably sensitive and gracefully timid Taylor Swift is undoubtedly a Composer Artisan.  Composers (like Taylor) “prefer to have their fingers on their compositional tools and through them feel the pulse of life”.  Indeed Taylor speaks almost exclusively through her music, as when Composers “find a medium of expression, some art form, then they will express their character quite eloquently via that medium”.

“Although Composers often put long, lonely hours into their compositions, we must not assume that they are working on their art in the sense of careful planning and dutiful execution.  On close observation, ISFPs prove to be just as impulsive as other Artisans.  Indeed, they covet their impulses and see them as the center of their lives.  They do not wait to act or to consider their moves, for to wait is to see their impulse wither and die; rather, they live intensely in the here and now, and as gracefully as possible, with little or no planning or preparation.  Submergence in their artistry is not preparation for something later, and neither is it artful play, such as Crafters engage in with their tools.  Composers are seized by the act of artistic composition, as if caught up in a whirlwind.  The act is their master, not the reverse, and, in a sense, the doing is elicited by the action itself.  ISFPs paint or sculpt, they dance or skate, they write melodies or recipes—or whatever—simply because they must.  They climb the mountain because it is there.”  Please Understand Me II, p. 73

Taylor‘s newest album Speak Now was released October 25th and is available on iTunes.
